Human Error Causes Deadly Collision: Kanchanjunga Express and Freight Train Crash Near Jalpaiguri


The express train's guard and the commodities train's driver both perished, according to Railway Board Chairperson Jaya Varma Sinha.


On Monday, a senior Railways official stated that a human error caused the Kanchanjunga Express and freight train to collide. According to the authority, the freight train's loco pilot ignored the signal. "This morning was the accident. The Kanchenjunga Express was going to Sealdah from Agartala.


A freight train that ignored the signal struck the train on the rear end, according to Railway Board Chairman and CEO Jaya Varma Sinha, who spoke to ANI. Nine persons have lost their lives in the accident. According to local accounts cited by news agency PTI, the death toll may reach fifteen.


A cargo train crashed into the Sealdah-bound train from behind. According to Sinha, the express train guard and the freight train driver perished in the collision as well. The Kanchanjungha Express guard and the cargo train's loco pilot have also perished.


Injured passengers have been admitted to North Bengal Medical College and number about fifty," Sinha continued. She claimed that three coaches caused the destruction of the guard's coach and two package vans of Kanchanjunga Express, but the passenger coaches were mostly spared.She said that the train's general compartment sustained damage in the crash. There has also been damage to the general compartment.


Saving lives was our top priority. It is now finished. The accident scene is 10 km from the New Jalpaiguri station. Our area officer and his crew arrived there," Sinha stated. She added that locals supported the NDRF, the Army, and the state government.


The automatic signaling system in West Bengal between Chattar Hat Junction and Ranipatra Railway Station has been malfunctioning since 5.50 am, a Railways source informed PTI. It was about three hours later that the disaster happened. "Train No 13174 (Sealdah Kanchanjungha Express) departed Rangapani station at 8:27 am and stopped between Ranipatra railway station and Chattar Hat due to automatic signalling failure from 5:50 am," a source informed PTI.


PM Narendra Modi expressed his condolences for the those who died in the collision. He told that Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw would be visiting the accident scene. Ex-gratia compensation has been announced by Vaishnaw for the accident victims. According to him, the injured will receive ₹2.5 lakh, while the families of the deceased will receive ₹10 lakh. Those with less serious wounds will receive ₹50,000.
