Think Twice Before Eating Ice Cream. Are you eating an ice cream or a human finger??
MUMBAI: On Wednesday, a doctor from Malad discovered a piece of a human finger within some ice cream he had ordered online. On Thursday, the management team of Yummo ice cream filed a formal complaint against the Malad police and sent the finger for a forensic test. The complainant, Brendan Ferrao, 26, told police that he and his sister had used the Zepto app to order three Yummo mango ice creams. Around 10.10 am, the order was delivered to their home. However, the delivery man brought two mango and one butterscotch ice cream, which was not what was ordered—instead of three mango ice creams.
Ferrao broke open the butterscotch ice cream cone after lunch. Something felt strange in his mouth as he was eating. When he spat it out, he discovered it was a piece of a fingernail from a human. Ferrao admitted to reporters that he felt like puking and was traumatized. He sent an Instagram complaint to Yummo Ice Creams. He was shortly phoned by a customer service executive. Ferrao told him that he had found a human finger in the ice cream. He was asked to email the order information and a photo of the ice cream pack's information by the customer service representative.
Ferrao followed the instructions, and ten or twelve minutes later, his family received a call from the customer service department saying they will investigate the matter. However, there was no reply after that. Ferrao said to the reporters, "I brought the finger and the wrapper to the Malad police station and preserved it in ice." The date of manufacture and expiration on the wrapper was May 11, 2024 and May 10, 2025, respectively. In Ghaziabad, Laxmi Ice Creams Pvt Ltd produced the good. "We have stopped manufacturing at this third-party manufacturing facility," a Yummo spokeswoman stated. We are now isolating the aforementioned goods at the facility and our warehouses, and we plan to do the same at the market level. Being a law-abiding business, we will assist and cooperate with authorities in their exhaustive investigation into the problem.”
According to the police, contamination during packaging was a possibility. "An FIR has been registered under sections 272 (adulteration of food intended for sale), 273 (sale of noxious food) and 336 (endangering life or personal safety of others) of IPC against people responsible from Yummo," stated DCP Anand Bhoite. Finger has been sent to the state forensic science laboratory for analysis. We will speak with company representatives and the factory where the ice cream was made," senior inspector Ravi Adane stated. "If it is a human finger, experts might be able to determine the age of the person if there are some bones and not just ligaments," forensic specialist Dr. Shailesh Mohite, dean of Cooper Hospital, which is managed by the local government, said. "They may be able to ascertain person's gender," he stated.
It is improbable that the digit can be reattached, even if it was well-preserved (because it was kept in a freezer to hold ice cream), according to plastic surgeon Dr. Nilesh Satbhai of Global Hospital. "We are unaware of the accident's time frame. In addition, the part has undergone several processes and might have been contaminated, making it unusable," he continued.
